Students in Birmingham City Schools return to class on Thursday, August 7, for another exciting year of learning. Throughout the spring and summer, the BCS team has prepared schools and resources to ensure that everything is in place on Day One.
The school district in 2024-25 saw its first enrollment increase in more than three years. With a full program of learning opportunities, district leaders are again anticipating more students than the previous year.
“We are hearing that more and more families are rediscovering Birmingham City Schools, and we also know that an increasing number of families are deciding to remain in our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan. “We continue to see progress among our scholars in our elementary and middle school grades. Our academies, specialty programs and career technical programs in high schools also continue to attract students.”
In August, BCS will open its Martha Gaskins Annex with more pre-K classes and 1st grade classes in the former North Roebuck Elementary School. This year, BCS will also roll out a new Early College initiative based at Wenonah High School. The district also has seen phenomenal success among its graduates from BCS Early College at Woodlawn. Students who completed that program have graduated with up to 60 hours of college credit in addition to their High School Diploma.
“We are proud of all that is happening in Birmingham City Schools,” Dr. Sullivan said. “Success Starts Here.”
